Course Description

This course is designed for pediatric Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists, to understand the foundations of therapeutic vibration as a modality. Attendees will examine the underlying biomechanical forces applied to the body using the Galileo side-alternating mechano-stimulation platform to safely and effectively enhance therapy outcomes with children. Alignment and positioning with hands-on lab time will allow attendees to practice UE, LE, breathing and voicing activities on the Galileo. Case studies of children with various diagnoses will demonstrate parameters, positions and follow up activities to optimize pediatric PT, OT and speech therapy.

Program Objectives

  1. Review of foundation knowledge of vibration as a therapeutic modality including side-alternating mechano-stimulation risks, benefits, parameters for therapy, and safety
  2. Define physiological effects and benefits of various parameters on side-alternating mechano-stimulation platform
  3. Understand static vs dynamic therapeutic body positions and activities on side-alternating mechano-stimulation platform related to functional activity
  4. Develop patient specific goals related to age, diagnosis, and tolerance for use of side-alternating mechano-stimulation for pediatric PT, OT, and ST
  5. Pre-test and post-test assessment skills to measure effects of WBV on therapy outcomes
  6. Review case studies of children with various diagnoses and ages using side-alternating mechano-stimulation

Participants will be able to

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of safe and effective parameters and positioning using Galileo whole body vibration.
  2. Safely introduce use of Galileo as part of a treatment plan for PT, OT or speech therapy.
  3. Assess effects of using whole body vibration in pediatric therapy.
